When you think of Celtic music, you might think of Irish jigs or Scottish airs. But the Celtic music tradition extends far beyond the most popular folk music from Ireland and Scotland. One of the lesser-known, but equally beautiful Celtic music traditions comes out of Brittany in the northwest region of France. In our new Harp Column studio, Breton harpist Tristan Le Govic introduces Harp Column Academy members to the rich musical tradition of his Brittany.

Le Govic begins with his “First Steps” series of three simple tunes that introduce you to basic concepts of the Breton music, including its aural tradition of learning music by ear. Don’t worry if you have never learned music by ear—Le Govic makes it easy with his clear instructions and demonstrations. Still not convinced? Le Govic also provides a PDF of the music notation for each tune so you can learn using the format is best for you. After the “First Steps,” Le Govic teaches Breton airs, marches, and dances, giving you a well-rounded repertoire of tunes to play.

So the next time someone asks you to play some Celtic harp music, you can treat them to some of the delightful Breton tunes you learned in Tristan Le Govic’s studio at Harp Column Academy!
